I'm with eon and have the elec usage meter which shows current usage/ per day/per month etc etc and have found it really useful in driving down my elec costs- does a similar thing exist for gas as I think my bills seem high for what it think I use ( individual thermostats on radiators in each room etc house only 8 yrs old and quite well insulated)

Sorry if this is a really stupid question

Thanks

  • British Gas usually fit both gas and electric smart meters although when they fitted my electric smart meter ( sounds like thats what you ve got ) They didnt fit the gas smart. Cant say for sure if the gas smart will give as much info as the electric but I m sure it will be giving at least cost per hour/week/month info.

Electricity is used by scores of items in the house(lights/appliances etc)

Gas is only used by the CH boiler for heating/hot water, cooker? gas fire?

It is obvious that the warmer you have the house, the more hot water you use, the higher the bills. The gas meter indicates that very well and accurately.

The problem with a gas boiler is that when it operates initially it uses huge amounts of gas at a rate of, say, 30kW+ an hour which on an 'instant' readout' meter would indicate a cost of over £1.50 an hour. However the boiler then either switches off on some boilers, or 'modulates'(turns down the output) on others. Only the gas meter can indicate how much it has used over a period of time.

    Morning scotdebs

Sounds like you're using one of the monitors we were supplying awhile back. These were only ever available for the electricity.

We no longer provide these as we're now installing smart meters. Smart meters come with an energy display and these are more accurate than the old monitors. These displays monitor gas usage as well as the electricity.

We're currently installing smart meters in selected properties. If you're interested, you can register through our website and we'll contact you about them.

Smart displays are a good way of keeping an eye on your usage although I agree with Cardew, the best way of doing this is through the meters.

We may be able to help you with your ongoing usage in other ways. We've a dedicated Energy Efficiency team who specialise in helping people with their usage. Have a chat with these guys. Tell them about your property and appliances. They'll be happy to help.

Ask for a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of useful advice.

Check out our website, too. Particularly the 'Interactive House' and 'Energy Menu.' More good tips here.

Hope this is of interest scotdebs. Give me a shout if you need any more info as happy to help.
