Thanks for the info - this is exactly what I wanted to know. Can it be done without wreaking the 'solid' nature of the doors? I realise they won't look 'as they should' but this is an old cottage so I'm not looking for everything to look perfect (it wouldn't look perfect if it was perfect so to speak!). Plus a circular saw is at the ready!

I need to have the confidence to tell my fitter 'do it'! I guess if it all goes pear shaped it's down to me. Can't think of any alternatives though

Yes it can easily be done but as I say the looks suffer a bit. The door remains solid and although it weakens it, it still remains solid enough to as not be an issue.
As an after thought, when I did mine I looked at the remaining doors and realised a similar door had been done the same way previously many years ago and it was still functioning as it should.
Also (although I didn't do this) they recommend fitting three hinges instead of the usual two as the door has been severely weakened.

For what it's worth I've also cut off more than the allowance on a glass panel door and a hollow door (by removing the lower brace, trimming and refitting the brace) and all have been without problems.

Thanks all - is all planned now. Usual sized doors will be cut down to fit - I think 40mm at the top and 60mm at bottom. Fingers crossed!
