Why will you lose the house? Can you not keep renting until the defaults drop off and your credit score improves?

If you won't be able to afford the rent once you retire surely you won't be able to afford all the necessary repairs and maintenance being an owner entails?

What makes you think you won't be able to afford the rent once you both retire? As far as I know there are additional benefits available to those on very low incomes.
