Ending tenancy and notice

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm trying to work out what date I need to give notice to end my tenancy agreement by, and what I still need to pay, it's confusing the life out of me!

Been in the flat for 14 months, signed the tenancy agreement on the 9th of the month. Rent, however is paid on the 15th of the month.

I am looking to move to a flat that's available from the 23rd August, is it cheeky to ask them to wait until the 9th September?
LL is on holiday until the weekend so trying to get my head round it now before they come back

    It's the tenancy period that drives things, not when you pay the rent.

    you can usually pick any day that you want to move in, just let them know the best day. As long as there is not a massive gap between when its ready and when you plan to move in, they most likly wont mind.

    however, i would give yourself at least few days where you have both places so you are not rushing around trying to move in.

    so if you plan to move in september, you will need to give your notice (assuming 1 month) before the payment date in august so you have a complete months of notice. You will then have 1 more monthly payment to make.
    So notice before the 9th august, then last payment on the 15th for that month

    You need to give notice on the 8th Aug (or before) and to be out on the 8th September.

    You can ask if they would hold your new flat, but for the sake of 2 weeks, id take the hit and pay twice. atleast you have wiggle room with the move then.

    I think you should consult the Shelter Scotland website fr guidance as I think the issue of statutory periodic tenancies is more complicated that in England & Wales.

    Still, as long as both you and the landlord come to a mutually agreed arrangement IN WRITING it doesn't really matter what the legal position is.

    Do not expect any new landlord to wait unless you are prepared to pay the rent between your old tenancy ending and the new one starting in August. Landlords hate void-periods and I suspect they might be tempted to withdraw the offer and find a different tenant who can be more flexible
