Currys vs Acer with battery issue.

Hello All

This is my first post on here, so hope I do this right, and that the wisdom of this site can help me with a small issue I'm having.

I bought an Acer Aspire V5-571 laptop at Currys, at the end of August last year. I paid for it by credit card, and still have the receipt.

The issue with the laptop is that the battery is no longer charging, and the battery is no longer detected. If I unplug the charger the the laptop shuts down, not exactly great for something that should be portable.

I've spoken to the Currys Knowhow team who said that Acer only does warrantiesfor 6 months ( which isn't what it says in their warranty booklet), so Currys wouldn't replace the battery, and I'd need to speak to Acer.

Acer said that the warranty work needs to be done by Currys, as they have the warranty contracts for the products, so I need to go back to Currys.

All I'm looking for is to get the battery replaced-hopefully for free under warranty.

So, before I start making calls, or I drive to my nearest Currys to talk to someone face to face, I'd like to know what the knowledgeable people on this site think.

1. Should my battery be covered under warranty?
2. If yes, should Currys or Acer do the work?
3. Should it be done free of charge?

Thanks very much for your help

Joe

Batteries are generally treated as consumables, so my hopes aren't over high for you getting the resolution you want.

There were however a load of BIOS updates for Acer notebooks that once a battery had run 100% flat, it wouldn't be recognised again, could be the same thing here. Try Acer's website for the latest BIOS, who knows, it may bring it back from the dead as it did my netbook.

If your laptop is faulty and the fault is inherent you are covered under the Sale of Goods Act. However since it has been more than 6 months since you purchased it then Currys would be within their rights to ask you to prove the fault is inherent. Paddyrg's comment about BIOS updates sounds promising though.

    Except the notebook isn't faulty.

The part that isn't working is the battery, which just like rechargeable AA batteries will decrease the amount of charge held the more it's used and even more can be damaged by the user misusing them.

However it could be a fault with the motherboard connector to the battery. Take it into a KnowHow bar in a Currys or PcWorld and say it's not detecting the battery and they should book it for repair, make sure you've backed up your data first and the paperwork you get after you've left it will tell you when to expect it back, but usually about 7-10 days along with tracking details.
