Slow PC, Hijackthis log

I'm a long time lurker but first time poster. I'm trying to sort out my nieces slow laptop. I've run multiple malwarebytes scans and removed loads of rubbish. I even took out the hdd an put it in a caddy to run a scan from my pc. Despite loads of stuff removed it is still having issues. It won't do much at all booted normally but seems to be running well in safe mode which it wasn't before.

Here is the hijackthis log, I hope I can get some help to sort it for her. I could back up her data and just wipe it but that is as a last resort as she no longer has license keys for some of her software and uses certain progs for uni that she can't afford to lose. Security is BTs free Mcafee, but it hasn't updated or run a scan for quite a few months and seems to be corrupted.

First thing I saw is Mcafee Toolbar and McAfee Site advisor. When I ran the same software, it slowed my PC down, I removed these and it speeded things up.

Ask Toolbar is also a hog (just my opinion) .

I took McAfee off and now use Trend Titanium, things are a lot faster.

I also found trusteer Rapport causing problems with slow running, removed that but I can't see that on the log.

Have you run Trend's House Call programme, it will identify a lot of problems for you.

I was going to suggest wiping the HD and reformatting but as serial numbers have been lost, this is not an option.

I am not sure about all the files missing on the system..have these corrupted?

I hope someone with more espertise than I have will be able to assist, but as I maintain the five computers in this house, these are some of the problems I can see..

Right I've disabled ask toolbar in the browsers but it won't uninstall, google toolbar has also gone, so has mcafee and getlyrics.

There were no addons in firefox, chrome is used mostly anyway. I've downloaded and run tdsskiller and it found no problems.

I'm still not 100% sure there's not also a hardware problem although RAM and HDD tests have passed fine.

Software with no licenses are a students full version of MS Office Pro, she does use access and publisher so can't go back to a lower version. She also has a student license for some CS5 packages. She stupidly deleted the emails with confirmation of her keys and threw out the packaging (typical teenager)

She only has to get through her final year of uni so if it had to be wiped she could make do with only accessing certain files on the uni PCs but not ideal. She hasn't made recovery disks but the recovery partition is in tact and her sister has the same laptop so I could make them on her's if I had to.

In normal mode it is just very sluggish, won't download anything, a few pop ups (I think I've now sorted these), freezes and it will not power off it's freezes on logging off screen and will stay that way until forced shut down.

In safe mode it's not as sluggish, only thing it wont download is windows updates, has only frozen a few times and shuts down fine.

you could do a macrium backup and disc, and reinstall and see if it cures it, then you can always go backwards for the office/cs5 if it's essential
