new front tyre - wheel wobble at 80mph

Options
Puncture yesterday. Luckily front tyres were due for replacement.

Not so lucky - no spare on a Ford Galaxy and I didnt have the temp tyre filler. Meant I had to call out mobile tyre fitter. Working 70 miles away from home.

Anyway, tyres fitted. BUT, I get a fair bit of wheel wobble at 80mph. He did balance the tyres (allegedly) with machine he had in the van.

I'm thinking he didnt do a great job. Sound about right? I'm guessing it must be balancing rather than tracking because it was fine with old tyres.

Only problem is, it was a mobile fitter who drove 40 miles to get to me. No good asking him to come back and check balancing I guess!

Might be easier for me to go to somewhere local to me and pay.

    Cheap tyres?

Some of the very cheap budget tyres are almost impossible to balance properly.

Have you tried staying within the speed limit. You may find they don't wobble at 70 mph.

Try this :) our local tyre place will only balance wheels upto 70mph. Over that there is nothing they can do.

Get it balanced again, sounds very much like it is the problem.

Check the wheelnuts are tightened correctly.

Normally wheel balance shows at 60-70 and you can drive through it.

If ok, take it to a tyre fitter and get the fitting* and balance checked on both tyres.

*It is possible to fit the tyre out of centre, but very unlikely. The fitter will see if it is running true when he puts it in the balancing machine
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

It does sound like balancing (or a tyre issue), but depending how the puncture occured and what happened after it did, the tracking could have been affected as well of course.

In your haste to be sanctimonious, did you consider that the may not be driving somewhere that has a 70mph max?

Isle of Man - for example

To the OP, I'd have it checked, it is probably a balance issue but could be a seating problem or even a faulty tyre

True enough. No obvious way that the puncture occured to be honest. ie didnt hit the kerb or anythking like that.

Exactly. Bit much to criticise me for doing 80mph. That'd be about 75% of motorway drivers then.

Yep will do on friday when im home.

But if the OP is having his wheels balanced in this country, they have to adhere to this countries rules and limits :) of course we all do over 70 on the motorway at some point but the tyre shops can still only balance to 70mph because this is the limit by law :)

Of course if your going somewhere with a more relaxed attitude to the speed limits than the uk, then get the tyres balanced there :T
