Electric Car + Energy Supplier Switch Comparison

Hi all -
My fixed price enegery deal ends tomorrow, and I am trying to work out the best deal to move to (all will be more expensive than the Scottish Power Online Energy August 2013 deal) - but to add into the mix, I am about to get an electric company car (!!). I have economy 7 meter fitted to the house, and as all of the charging of the car will be done in the E7 hours, I am trying to work out the best deal - wondered if I could run my calculations past you all
Current usage (pre-car) is 7200 kw / year (23% of that is E7)
The car battery is 16kw - so every charge, I guess I would use 16kw - right?
so that would be an extra 5840kw a year if I charged the car every night.
This would raise my E7 usage to 55% , and my total usage to 13040kw pa
When I seach for deals, the best deal is not an economy 7 deal , but a first 5000kw @ 12p approx with remaining at 6.6.p approx plus a 21p a day standing charge -

I can only aspire! Tried the Vauxhall Ampera, and it is very nice - I drive 40 miles to work and back every day, and I currently spend about £6.50 doing so - I can charge a car for the same distance for just over £1, so saving £5.50 a day - or over 252 working days - about £1300 - doesn't seem to silly to me. Plus company car tax is £70 pm compared to the £250 per month currently - so saving another £2160 pa - I will quite happily take a £3500 pay rise to drive a 'milk float' that can do 0-60 in 8.5 seconds!

You have your terminolgy incorrect.
The battery capacity is measured in kWh and the max power of the electric motor is given in kW.
For instance the Nissan Leaf battery capacity is 24kWh and the motor is 80kW.
If your car has a 16kWh capacity battery(what car?) the charge required each night would depend on two factors:
1. How much capacity was left in the battery when it started to recharge. It is unlikely to be completely flat every night!
2. Any losses in the charging system.
What tariff has a daily standing charge, and a two tier system of charging(12p/kWh and 6.6p/kWh)?
I thought utility companies had a mandate to simplify tariffs!0 -
At least with the Ampera you won't suffer from range anxiety. 80 miles in a Leaf would be pushing it unless there is a chargingoint at work.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Agree with all of the above - yes kWh is what I should have written - My calcs were quick and just for illustration - Even with the battery 20% before charging, and losses in the system, then 16kWh seems ok for this purpose for a nightly charge - I will calculate more accurately when in possesion of the vehicle.
Re: Tariffs - seems a lot of suppliers are using a standing charge now (more than I can recall when I last changed)
Best rate is from iSupply -- Electricity standing charge (per day) 21.00p
- Electricity tier 1 12.201 p/kWh (first 5000kWh)
- Electricity tier 2 6.691 p/kWh
as does NPower Energy Online October 2014
which were the 2nd and 3rd most cheap suppliers to switch to - all with standing charge and 2 tariff.
4th Scottish Power- Electricity standing charge (per day) 34.251p
- Electricity tier 1 12.949 p/kWh
- Electricity tier 2 5.763 p/kWh

The Ampera engine cuts in to charge the battery when the 16kWh battery is down to 20% of capacity. So it seems to me that the maximum possible charge each night will be 12.8kWh.
Your calculation of additional consumption was based on 16kWh for 365 days a year(5840 kWh) in practice it will probably be closer to 3,500 -4000kWh??
On a wider issue it will be interesting to to see how long the 'payback' time will be when running the Ampera.
It costs around £15,000?? more than the equiv size Vauxhall. You are working on a consumption of approx 37mpg for your run to and from work(£6.50 for 40 miles)
As you say, fuel saving, road fund licence and company car tax are big savings - depreciation with the possibility of needing to replace battery pack are ?? Insurance?? Servicing??

Hope you are correct but not convinced - time will tell. Congestion charging exempt in London would have been a big bonus!- Payback is not an issue as it would be contract hired for less cost per month than my existing company car (and not at my expense - I just pay Company car tax)- Battery has 8 year warranty - + lifetime (100,000 miles) warranty for the rest of the car,.

Are you sure?
iSupply show up as 20p a day standing charge and 12p per unit. No second rate showing? Maybe it's a geographical thing, but seems a hell of a difference! I'd jump ship right now from my current supplier to get the rates you are quoting!0 -
