Would you buy a house with an East facing garden?

How much sun would it get? I love sitting outside in the afternoon/ early evening. Would hate it to be gloomy.

Cheers!

quick guess as we're North facing and I'm looking at neighbours east facing - he gets it morning /afternoon but loses it by teatime..it's a 2 storey with average length garden...depends on how close together the house are. !!!!!! for an evening beer methinks. Guess a few garden lights and a chimnea would add a bit more coziness....

Well, I probably would because, while I like to sit out, I don't like feeling fried :D We deliberately chose this house because the rear faces NNE and there is shade for me to sit in. The rear of our old house faced W, and I found it too uncomfortable sometimes, and that was before anyone was really talking about climate change.

In the rented house we have we have an east facing garden. We are quite overshadowed too by large trees which doesnt help

I have to be honest, I dont think Id want an east facing garden.

im all up for growing my own veg and here in london where the weather is perfect for it, we are getting very little growing indeed. We get sun from about 8.30 am to about 11.30 am otherwise its completely shaded.

Washing takes about 3 days to dry too :wall:
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

Oh my goodness- would hate all sun to be gone by 11.30. Anyone else with an East facing?
  • My house is east facing, I only get the sun till about 4.30 and I HATE it! I love sittuing out in the evening but even with global warming I'm still too cold.
The alternative is to sit out the front like a chav ...... I have been known to be that desperate! Never again!!!!!!!

My last house had an east facing garden, wouldn't ever buy one again. Terrible for BBQ's as the garden was in shade from around 4PM.

Now I've got a SSW faing garden, which is just great - however the living room at the front of the house gets no sun in the evening and does feel a bit dull. The ideal may be a West facing garden so the front of the house gets sun in the morning & the back in the evening.

Surely you buy a house more for the location, condition, and layout of rooms more than the direction of the garden?

No, the garden is part of the house.

I have an east facing garden and i love it!

we have a patio by the house which by 2.30 is in shade- which is great when the sun is blistering down. It also keeps the house cool all day.

we have another patio further down the garden, about 90 feet from the house which is in the sun all day and has the garden chairs, table, parasol etc.

Barbeques are no problem-the chaps can barbie on the top patio in the shade and we can all sit and drink our glass of something in the sunshine.

so my answer would be- yes go for east facing but make sure that the garden is big enough to take advantage of the afternoon sun if you want to.

the back of the house is cool all afternoon because it is in the shade, we mostly use the bedrooms at the back of the house for us and guests. and in the summer they are still pleasant instead of being boiling.

I'd guess it depends how long the garden is and how high the house is.

Mine's got a small weed patch on the East side and a slightly bigger one on the west side - the eastern side get sun until about 2pm in summer (house is only 1 1/2 storeys high though) and the wall on the other side of the drive adjacent to the Eastern side garden gets sun all day long.
