America trip advice

Hi, I'm looking to head to the USA around October/November next year and I was hoping for some advice from you lovely people :-)
The plan (at the the minute) is along these lines:

Fly into New York, with either Virgin or BA

Spend 3/4 Nights in New York, catch some shows on broadway do touristy stuff, and I will need a hotel

Fly to Nashville, spend around 10 days with family, where I won't need a hotel or anything

Fly back to the UK, with either Virgin or BA

I was hoping for advice along the lines of best times to book, whether to do it myself or go to a travel agents and any tips people may have.

I wouldn't mind some general advice on things such as car rental and other things I may require/want whilst I would be there.

Thanks very much in advance!

If you want to go in 2014 you could start looking at flights at the end of 2013, there is often a sale at the end of December with the major airlines.
