What happens if I get a new passport between booking and travelling

I am about to book a holiday (flights hotel) to New York, in October. My passport expires in November (after ten years) and I will need a new one. The airline booking form asks for current passport and esta number. I can supply these ones but need a new passport before I travel as the airline regs say (I have checked) that it must be valid for one month after return. So I need to get a new one to travel. But it won't match the numbers supplied at booking.
How does this work?

I thought you can provide the passport number at a later date - not at the same time as booking? It's the advance passenger info bit?
The US gives an extra 6 months validity on passports to certain countries holders, so you could use your passport anyway.
But if you want to get a new one then have you tried booking the flights but just not entering the passport info yet? I'm sure I've always done it later on.0 -
If you renew your passport now, you can add up to 9 months of your existing passport's validity to the new passport.

If you do that, I think you'd need to apply for a new ESTA but would be all set for the next couple of years if you want to go back.0 -
Is that definitely right Roger1 as both my husband and I have recently renewed our passports but applied for ESTA's ages ago?The Cabbage

What should I do if the information on my passport has changed?- If you obtain a new passport or there is a change to your passport information, you must apply for a new travel authorization and pay the associated fees. See What information can I update? for a full listing of information that can be changed after submission of your application.

I agree with you about being able to use the old passport BUT when we went through border control in April this year, I asked if my wife could re enter the USA in October this year using her current passport, it expires in January 2014.
He told us NO it has to be valid for 3 months after the date of entry, hers would have been a few days short.
I think he was wrong but we weren't going to risk it, after all if we had got the same guy we may well have had a battle on our hands.
Wife has applied for a new passport and yes she will have to get a new ESTA0
