I think you really did have to leave VCRs to warm up on installation as they had condensation in them & this had to dry. (I'm not making this up - honest!)

I know very few people do but it is reccommended that any new electronic equipment is allowed a couple/few hours to warm up as the teperature change from being in a warehouse or the back of the engineers van can cause condensation to form which potentially can cause a short circuit and damage the equipment.

  • I work in a second hand shop (one of the larger ones) and we're selling a vcr right now for a fiver.

Oh, this drives me mad. My elderly aunt insists on renting a telephone from BT, even though we have told her that we'll take her out and buy one for her. When her last (rented) phone started falling to bits we actually went to her place specifically to take her phone shopping, when we got there, she already had her new rented phone in place, which she insists on having as "they will repair it or replace it if it goes wrong".....she won't listen when we tell her that if it goes wrong, we'll just buy her a new one. I wouldn't mind if she got a new, updated phone every couple of years or so but she had the last one for over 12 years, I didn't even realise that you could still rent BT phones!

Thankfully, the next generation won't be so easily ripped off!

OP, get a new (second-hand?) VHS for your grandmother, take it round to her and then cancel the contract. Or, get their number and call and ask what will happen to the machine when you cancel. They probably won't even bother to collect it as it is so old!
