Buying first Home advice

Hi All,
As the title says I'm in the process if trying to buy my first home and am a bit confused about how the process should work.
I've been to my mortgage advisor and spoke to him about affordability. Now I didn't get a API in place as my GF was worried about searches on her Credit file (I did try to explain that one wouldn't hurt but she insisted).
So we have found a house and put an offer in which has been accepted.
The same day we applied for our mortgage and waiting for a decision this week (I'm assuming that this will be yes they will lend us the amount we as long as there valuation agrees with the house prices)?
While we are waiting the estate agent is asking for Solicitor details, we haven't sorted this yet as don't want to pay for any solicitor fees if the mortgage application is turned down. Does this sound reasonable or should we have already sorted a solicitor.
After this I understand that we need to get surveys done which I'm hoping the Solicitor will help sort, again is this a reasonable expectation or will I need to sort this myself?
Any advice on this will be much help.
Thanks

get some quotes
then when you are ready to accept one, tell them you are still waiting your mortgage approval, and ask if they are happy for their details to be passed on to the estate agent before you have instructed them0 -
Instructing a solicitor doesn't cost anything.
Simply ask them to open a file and do nothing until they hear further from you.I am a mortgage broker. we have just done as King says, and what our MB told us to do ,
its one thing less to worry about I suppose but I must admit it took me by surprise, EA asking for solicitor's name in the same breath as he told us offer had been excepted
our MB told us to tell the EA to give her a ring if they have a problem0
