Bills - help!

Options

Hi,

Hoping someone here can help me… I’m preparing a budget for myself and my fianc! as we are moving into our new house soon (if the solicitors ever get on with it). I know what our mortgage and council tax will be but I need to get an idea of what water, gas and elec should be.

It’s a 4 bed house but currently two bedrooms will be empty (not for long though J ). We’re relatively frugal and good at not leaving lights etc on. I know it’ll be rough only but can anyone give me an idea of what my water/gas/elec costs will be per month?

I've been debt free for a year so I'm really anxious to have a realistic budget

Thanks,

maskerade

How long is a piece of string, no one can really give you any idea of how much your gas or electricity will be, because every household uses different appliances, has different heating systems, to find out exactly what your water rates will be phone, your local water board, they will be able to tell you what your water charges will be, it really does work out cheaper if you have a water meter. They will be able to give you advice.

    How old is the house?

    Is it double-glazed?

    Is it gas central heating?

We're a couple in a 4-bed detached (1990 built) so I can tell you what we spend on bills if your house is vaguely similar. If you're moving into a Victorian terrace on the other hand.... :)

If the property isn't a new-build I suggest you ask the vendors what they spend.

So you're going to have kids i take it, you're underestimating, no matter what you've put down for child cost, double it, then add some more. :)

Some of the energy comparison sites, when they ask you for the annual consumption / cost, have an option for you to input 'dont know', which takes you to another screen where you input basic details about the property and they estimate the consumption.

Below are our regular monthly payments based on a 3bed semi-detached. 3 occupants 2 adults, 1 child.

Gas & elec £170pcm (slightly high atm due to direct debit !!!! up and cold winter).
    Water £38

The thing to remember is that the little things each month all add up ie, TV licence, house ins, car ins, life ins, phone line / sky, mobile phone, petrol.

Just to say bills can be lower, so you can average out all answers if you want:

    Gas: £34/month
    Elec: £32/month
    Water £32/month

Then there is all other things like:
    building/contents insurance £200/year
    TV licence £160/year
    etc

3 bed semi with 2 adults, 2 children
