Passport validity/renewal for US trip

My UK passport expires on 1 December 2013. I assume it is valid for a one week visit to the US this October (2013).
It will be 10 years old in December when it expires. Can I renew by returning it with two new photos, or do I need to start again. Anyone done this recently and how long does it take?

Yes, your passport is valid for your October trip to the US.

I believe, but to double check, that if you still look similar and can be recognised you don't need to get your photos signed again.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
