That's your opinion, you've qualified it with the word "should", as in when the OP breaks his neck, you can you didn't state it would be ok..
What you are saying is reasonable, but it's the gluing of the whole thing where this fails. Many simply don't do it correctly.
The correct adhesive, cascamite or similar, has to be used and applied to all contact areas.
This is certainly a topic when genuine safety concerns come in to play, not just for the OP, but possibly for the future 20 stone owner of the property, a safety factor has to be employed.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

The way has to be done, unless i was to remake some kind of covering for it like it was before i cannot reuse the current post that is there as the condition of it is terrible.
I know this is not the point, however the banister doesn't get used or even touched because of where / how it is.
I think i'm going to have to go with the dowel method.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -

I was going to suggest you clad the posts with a matching shim of the material you use, depends though if you want more ornate newels.
But please, make sure it's done as well as possible, dowelled joints really are a shortcut devised by such as Richard Burridge for the diy market. They will never be as strong as the original;);).I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Yeah that's my opinion, if he breaks his neck because it's not glued properly would that be my fault?0 -

Not at all, you re-assured him he should be all right, you are correct in making him aware that he may not be.
Won't be your fault but the end result could be the same if the job isn't done correctly.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
