Electrical Isolator Switch to Mains rcd

How much would it cost for an electrical isolator switch going to board. Sparky suggested one.

Do I have to get the electrical company to do or can I get a sparky to do it?

Any suggestions as I need a new consumer unit.

Needs doing before new unit cam be put in.

Not sure its a diy job.

Cheers faith

alot of supliers wont do a isolator anymore
the way ive found round it is to ask for a fuse upgrade and when there onsite to ask for the isolator
or you need the supplier to cut seals remove fuse and your sparky to install isolator and then suplier to put fuse and seals back

    DEFO NOT A DIY JOB

UKPN doesn't install isolators during a main intake fuse upgrade. You can arrange for the fuses to be removed on a particular date so your chosen electrician can fit a main isolator switch.

Why has your electrican suggested this ? It's not a regulation to have one .

Incidentally, the new consumer unit will usually have a main isolator switch anyway. Having one upstream of the consumer unit makes it easier for the electrician otherwise they have to work live or wait for the main fuses to be removed.

What that electrician means is that for THEM to fit it they will require an isolator. Try speaking to a few other electricians. It is not a requirement.

The utility company may not fit them and will pass you back to your electrician. If they do, it will be very expensive.

If the electrician is insisting on an isolator switch, it could mean that he is not very experienced.

Working live is the last option, however, he should have suggested arranging for the utility company to remove the fuses on a set date so that he can fit an isolator switch.

As I mentioned before, most new consumer units have a main isolator switch built-in.
