Hi, can someone give me a rough idea on how much it would cost to replace the power steering pump? My car is a Ford KA 2001. My car started making a weird noise last night (one I have never heard coming from it before) that seemed to be worse in gears 1 & 2, and also when Turning the wheel. I thought I better take it to a garage this morning, as there was fluid on the pavement, located underneath the bonnet, the noise was also still there. I took my car to halfords auto centre ( only place open on a Sunday). On the drive down there the steering became quite tight. The mechanics checked the car over for me and said my power steering was about to go and that the power steering pump needs to be replaced. They couldn't do the labour or give me a price due to it being Sunday afternoon. Will this be quite pricey to get done?

Quite a common problem on KA's.
£100-120 to buy, maybe £60-80 to fit? That was roughly what i paid for the last one i got done0 -

Expect Halfrauds to tell you that you need tyres and brakes while its there.0

Hmm I'm not taking it back to halfords i gatherd you'd be paying for the name, I would expect their prices to be high... It was the only place open today, I needed to know what was up with it, luckily they didn't charge me to go over the car. Will be taking it to a garage iv been to before to see what they say. I'm hoping its not going to be a fortune to fix.0 -
i wouldnt say i power steering pumps on these were a common problem. i would say the powersteering racks are a common problem.
if it is the pump, it maybe cheaper to buy a recon unit, rather than rely on a scrap yard unit to last (theyre drained of fluid and left to sit on a shelf to dry out wich isnt a good thing for the internal parts great if it is still fitted to the car with fluid in but rare these days due to waste management requirements)
it could be the rack as they tend to leak from the pinion housing unit on the rack and spray the road and underthe bonnet with fluid.
i would get a indy garage to look over it again, i really dont trust a diagnosis from a chain of known garages like halfords.0
