Lost wallet - identity theft precautions?

Hi,

Last night I either lost my wallet or had it stolen. Thankfully it was handed into a pub about 40 minutes after I realised it was gone. On collection today it seems that my money is gone but cards and driving license were thankfully left well alone.

Given the time that passed I'm thinking that either I dropped it and the person handing it in took my money, or somebody wanted to make a quick swipe without the hassle.

However, I've cancelled my cards as a precaution. I'm also wondering though whether I should worry be taking extra steps against identity theft. A search on here talks about registering with CIFAS. Is that overkill or a sensible thought?

Thanks!
