Does any other adult live in the property ?, you may be eligible to get 25% Council tax discount depending on how much he earns as an apprentice.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Have child benefit office sent you a form to fill out? I was in the same situation a couple of years ago and continued to claim child benefit for my son who started an apprenticeship and ended up with nearly a thousand pounds to pay back. Be very careful you don't end up in this situation, keep them informed and above all be honest with them. It was a genuine mistake on my part but they told me I was lucky not to have been prosecuted for benefit fraud!0

Your CB and CTC stopping depends on whether your son is on a modern apprenticeship or a Programme Led Pathway into apprenticeship. Either way, your cb and ctc won't stop untill the 1st Mon in Sept anyway. He cannot claim IS or anything else, and as you already pay full council tax no he won't be expected to pay anything towards it ( you CT bill won't increase because he will be earning £40 pw) - unless you insist he contributes.
BTW - £40 pw seems a little low for a modern apprenticeship, my DD's connexions adviser told her to expect a min of £80pwWise men talk because they have something to say, Fools because they have to say something

Melanie the best thing to do is for you son to find a summer job, maybe in retail, and he could always stay on a do it on a saturday to supplement his apprenticeship money, when he passes he will then pay you housekeeping which will cover any 'benefits' that you have lost

There's also no reason he couldn't pay you, say, £10 per week out of his money which will help a bit.0
