    Don't stint on your underlay. Cheap underlay will make an expensive carpet look pants after a while but expensive underlay will make a cheap carpet look the bees knees.

    Agree with others. It's not worth the hassle/cost of DIYing. Get someone in.

    Buy the underlay and grippers from the independent fitters. Their mark-up is far, far less than the big sheds who use them as the cash cow.
