Police parking fine

Hi, I received a parking fine for parking on a single yellow line, it was my fault I never seen it and there wasn't any signs up to say no parking between hrs 8-6, because it was a police parking fine I went into the Scottish courts fine website to pay it but the the reg plate has been entered wrongly, they have input a v instead of a u into the reg. Do I still have to pay it if they have made a mistake with the car reg plate.

If it went to court they would just be able to correct the error (in England, assume Scotland the same), so its best IMHO to pay on the V.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

A single yellow line MUST have a sign on a pole or on a nearby wall giving the hours that the restrictions are in force.
Are you really sure there was not a sign. Go back and have a good look especially at the beginning and the end of the yellow line.
If you're right take several pics and and the ticket can be successfully appealed.
What to do next depends totally on whether the signs exist or not.
Loads of local councils have inadequate signage.
Aberdeenshire in particular have a very cavalier attitude to yellow lines.0 -
Was it a parking ticket or one for obstruction?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

It was a parking ticket for being outside the waiting time.0

Then wait for someone more Au Fait with Scottish regs.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

You might be able to check for signs in google maps.
What town and what street?
Does it also give an address - house number for example?
Even if there are signs you need to check that the yellow lines do completely comply with the regulations regards T-bar endings and missing sections etc.
Paying up is the last resort.0 -
Police ticket not council ticket is probably under criminal regs. so minor discrepancies don't apply. Next stop would be the Scottish equivelent of Magistrates court.
Maybe a post on pepipoo.com would shine some light on this, they have a good few scottish contributers.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -

I agree - but a lot depends on which town we are talking about.
In any Scottish city you would be 100% spot -on, but in many small towns (under 3000 pop. and with maybe only 2 or 3 main streets, we hardly see parking wardens.
So the local bobby walking by will occasionally issue a ticket.
That's why I asked for the location.0 -
If your VRM is incorrect, then the paperwork is wrong. However, it may end up being one of interpretation as a v & a u are broadly similar they could argue it remains valid due to the the issuer always writes the letters that way.
You could still pay, (as you were there and over the limit) using the revised reference. However, if you wish to challenge it could be more costly.
In my Scottish town, police ceased issuing tickets 3 years ago and it will not b until this October that the council takes over with their new decriminalised scheme, so it was indeed tough luck.0
