Roof coating

we've had a brochure put through our door, as have our neighbours, for cleaning & protective coating on our roofs. The roof have cement based tiles so the moss grows on them quite prolifically - give me Welsh slate as on our previous homes anyday!! - do these coatings work in preventing the moss? the quote is £850 for a standard semi detached house

Treat the brochure as you would any other junk mail and instantly save yourself £850. Apart from being a tad unsightly the moss won't harm your tiles.0

yes there was a programme on Tuesday evening which was talking about conmen and one of the things they sold was this coating for roof tiles. they asked a qualified surveyor who said moss does not harm roof tiles.0

We have just purchased a bungalow that has its roof covered quite a lot with moss and we were relieved to view the same programme and although a little unsightly to be assured that it causes no harm was welcoming.
I had thought of maybe trying to use a hard bristle brush to try and remove some to avoid it blocking the gutters. Probably easier to keep the gutters clean on a monthly basis.
Thanks for the interesting posts.0 -
The Housing association has just cleared all of the roofs of their houses by us and they basically just scraped it off, it doesn't look like they bothered coating them and I assume they did it as part of the general upkeep as they did the guttering too. The only benefit I can see (apart from cosmetic) is to stop the gutters getting blocked.0

hi all,
google copper ridge tile and read up, been round years and works over time, once done that's it. ask your friendly roofer.
roof moss lichen and other plant life all hold water moisture and grow under the tile the tile is nailed down, water corrodes nail, tile slips, winter time water freezes in mosses and expands cracks tiles loosens nails ect. not going to happen over night but a few years of intense growth and your going to get wet.0
