I have a copy of MS 2007 on a machine which is about to give up the ghost. I cant find my "green slip" that came with the program BUT I have been able to obtain my serial key.
If I download a copy MS Office 2007 from MS onto a replacement machine, can I then use the serial key, after all I did buy the licence in the first place. Or do I have to resign myself to having to buy a new copy of MS Office for the new machine?

Unfortunately it's an "it depends" answer. If the original licence was an OEM licence then it dies with the machine on which it was installed. If Office 2007 was pre-installed on the computer when you bought it, it's almost certainly an OEM licence. The product key (not the serial key) will often include the letters OEM as a clue.
However, if it's a retail licence then you should have no problem re-using the serial key on a new machine. If you bought Office in a shop it will almost certainly be a retail licence, ditto if you bought online - though if you got it at a really cheap price it could be you were sold an OEM licence.
Hope that helps.0 -
Try it and see.
That's what I always do.
I'm still using a Windows 95 program that I was told wouldn't work on Windows 8.
I installed it and it worked.0 -

I used Magic Jelly Bean on my machine and it told me I had an OEM version of MS Office Basic 2003 but a non-OEM of Office 2007. As suggested I think I might get the keys of the machines that are on their last legs. If an installation doesn't work then its an extra cost but if it works...happy days (yep, I know about the alternatives but they are used in a work environment and having no (very few) compatibility issues is crucial and our IT computer will only assist with MS Office.0

It should work...as long as you download the corresponding version.MS Office Home and Student edition (Word, Excel, OneNote, Powerpoint) allows 3 installations for a single household.
The other Retail editions, such as MS Office 2007 Standard Edition (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook) allow 2 installations for one person.

If you have an issue activating after moving a MS Office retail product to another computer you can use the telephone activation
method).0
