Lloyds TSB + Paper free bullies

Hi guys,

My mum got home today after going the bank and told me that after cashing her cheque, the girl she was seen by was speaking to a bloke in the back and then the bloke came to the desk and told her "They are phasing out paper statements now" And that she had to pick a password to use for online banking or something.

I am really annoyed because it sounds like they took advantage of her by making her agree to paper free statements without actually telling her it was optional.

I wasn't there with her, so can't be much more clear on what was said, but she said he was quite forceful about it.

I am going to call them on Monday and complain, but I fear that the damage may already have been done, and they will say it can't be reversed back to paper statements. Or if it can, they will probably ask for a fee.

I am quite disgusted about this and how they are picking on pensioners knowing they probably don't have a computer anyway and won't put up a fight.

Does anyone know what I should do about this, or say to them on Monday?

    My Halifax online banking allows me to click somewhere to turn paper statements back on. As Lloyds TSB sits on the same platform I assume your Mum can change thing with relative ease.

    It sounds like you're getting a bit over excited.
    I am quite disgusted about this and how they are picking on pensioners knowing they probably don't have a computer anyway and won't put up a fight.
    Do you seriously think there's a policy of promoting online services to people with no computer?

    Yes same option appears on LTSB banking to turn paperless on and off. I prefer paperless

    When I worked for LTSB many moons ago, there were certainly targets for customer internet banking registrations.

    It sounds like the good old practise of lying to customers to achieve your targets is alive and well.

    I'd imagine the paper statement thing is easily reversed. It'll be the IB registration that matters to them.

    As I said, I believe he was just trying to get her off paper statements, like ALL banks and credit card companies are pushing for, over these last few years. I have had the same level of BS myself so I know how manipulative they can be.
    So no, I am not getting over-excited at all. These people are told to push as many customers as possible into paperless statements, because it saves them money and probably MAKES them money in the long run due to the fee people need to pay to request statements for things like legal cases, proof of income etc.

    You might be able to switch them back on but that doesn't give back the statements you have missed in the meantime.
    However, last time I was asked to switch by my bank, I asked them how I would switch back and they said there would be a fee to do it.

    Paperless is lovely but not when you need your statements as legal proof.. for a mortgage lender etc - they don't accept printouts.

    Glad to see atleast one of you isn't naive. No offence guys ;)

    I'll just call them on Monday, but will definitely be complaining because Mum didn't realise what she had agreed to until later, when I told her, and I'm pretty sure its illegal for them to force you into paperless statements, which he basically did by telling her "she will have to pick a password because we're phasing the paper statements out now."
    I'm sure they would LIKE to.. but there's a lot of people left, like myself who will stick with them.

    My bank, Barclays, doesn't let you see online transactions before your last statement date, unless you're paperless. Which in my eyes, is just another tactic to get you to switch.

    I believe online statements should be an added feature, rather than an alternative. But they won't do that until they have enough people off paper. :mad:

    I seem to recall Lloyds hold 7 years worth of statements online which is pretty good

    The impression I got last time I read through the guides on MSE, was that they will likely charge for statement copies but not for a "list of transactions"?

    If this is still so, are these transaction lists still accepted by people who request financial proof?

    Is this account you are talking about a sole account of your mothers?
    If so then YOU cannot raise a complaint only she can. In fact they should not even acknowledge that she has a account to you.

    Yes. You can go with your mother and speak to someone about the issue and make sure that she gets paper statements.

    There is a lot of rubbish posted in here about being forced onto paperless, as banks have targets.
    Everyone has the right to say NO.
    As has been pointed out. Not everyone has internet access.

    If you need a copy statement for proof, then it will be provided for FREE by your bank.
    You only get charged when you ask for copy statements and you already receive paper statements.

    I like the idea of paper free statements but the strange thing is I cannot seem to arrange this with their credit card. Even though I can pay and view details online there does not seem anyway of stopping the statements coming through the post. Complete waste of time and just end up in the shredder.
