child benefit query

My sister in law split from her ex 3yrs ago, they have an 8yr old son. The child benefit was getting paid into their joint account. When they split she started claiming child tax credits and working tax credits, it wasn't until today in conversation that she mentioned her incomings and outgoings etc, I said what about your child benefit? She assumed that was part of her child tax credits. So she contacted ex and asked him, he said it must of gone into the account which is now in his name but he didn't realise as it's overdrawn so much. Any advice would be helpful

Sometimes tax credits do update your bank details for child benefit all at the same time, sounds like this has not happened here though, she needs to ring the child benefit people See Here and give them her new bank details.

As for payments paid into joint account, well I doubt the child benefit people will have much to say about that it was your sister in laws responsibility to keep them updated and she did not, she could ask her ex for it I suppose but surely she would be half responsible for the "huge" overdraft on their old joint account?

That's the thing, the debts were run up after they split. I said it should've been down to her, so not to expect anything back.

He didn't notice in 3 years he was getting child benefit?

Lets hope the money somehow still got to child, i think either parent is entitled to claim CB so can't really blame IR, she needs to claim it herself asap.

He's renound for excuses, doesn't pay maintenance and now this. I didn't think someone could stoop that low
