So happy - had to tell some one. Couldn't boil the kettle during the 19 hour power cut and am suffering from tea withdrawal.

Northern Grid seem to have installed a series of generators down our road (big green things - about the size of a transit van). Does this denote a serious fault? And are the generators going to be reliable eg if it rains?

Our whole town (in Essex) had a problem several years ago where a cross river power cable failed and we were subject to frequent power outages as the alternative feed into the town was inadequate.

The electricity supply co installed several (quite a few in fact) generators to maintain supplies whilst a new cable was being laid across the river and a new substation was built.

I'd guess that the generators were there for about three months and during that time there were no power cuts. After the new cable & sub-station were commissioned the generators were removed and we didn't have any more outages. So they were reliable

Is this the one in Darlo. If they are bringing generators in, it's a bit more complicated than most issues.

No, not Darlo (? Darlington?) - rural area on East Coast. Apparently issue only affects about 10 houses but over several square miles.


We're still on this morning (just boiled kettle for coffee). Bit worried about impact of weather on generators - but reassured by poster who said they were reliable

What do they run off? Diesel presumably.

What happens if the Diesel supply truck can't get through to the rural area if you get deep snow? :eek:

They have specially trained St Bernards that carry a little barrel of diesel around their necks.

Shirley its a good idea to purchase a Camping Gaz stove and lamp for such emergencies and a few spare canisters.
There will be more power cuts in the future as we move to unreliable windmills, and solar with no back up 'cos the ecomentalists have delayed sensible energy provision.

We have a single ring gas burner that uses the cans, 2 of the canister type things (1 Calor Gas & 1 Coleman with the cans that can be removed when stove isn't being used). They're all at my parents house as we don't have room to store them. We do have a torch in the house though. Our electric never went off during last winter though.

Me too: just moved into my property with a condemned gas hob.. so down to Robert Dyas who had a camping stove for a tenner: gas cylinders are expensive though, so it's quick fries or use the pressure cooker. If boiling water just boil exactly what you need.
