I want to do a course in Brighton which I can't do in Cornwall but it involves traveling to the University of Sussex, Brighton every other Saturday from Redruth, Cornwall. I can't book a train ticket yet because it starts on 29 September but would it work to split the journey on this route? I can get a Young Person's Railcard. Would it be cheaper on the train or would it be cheaper to drive? (I have a Daewoo Matiz so small engined).
As the course is 10am-4pm and there are no direct trains back at that time without a long stop, I will probably have to stay at a hotel overnight too. As I don't know the area (don't venture out of Cornwall often!) how do I go about finding a hotel/B&B/YMCA whatever close to the Uni/Station?
Any help/advice gratefully received

Hi Kate, I used to do the journey from sussex to redruth regularly. My advice would be to drive as trains will take approximately 7 hours each way, and the university is on outskirts of town so either taxi or bus to add more time. Drive is approximately 275 miles and will take about 5 hours. I would therefore suggest that one way at least you'll need some accomodation. There are plenty of travelodges on the route or you might be able to find a nice b&b that would welcome you as a regular customer0
