Transforming a euro-cheque into Pounds - cheaply

Every so often, a friend of mine gets sent a cheque for about 50 euros drawn on a European bank, but her British bank charges £8 or £12 for the conversion when paid into her bank account.

Is there a cheaper conversion method that people could suggest and have used? Thanks!

Yes - she should tell whoever is sending the cheques to use a different (i.e. online) payment method, which will be both cheaper and quicker. Small cheques in a foreign currency are a waste of time and money.

I cannot disagree with this! She has already told the sender that crisp British tenners are far preferable, but the sender seems wedded to the euro...

In that case, she should tell the sender to send crisp Euro tenners, and she can either convert them to sterling with no delay or hang on to them to use herself on a future trip to Euroland.
