Hi
I was wondering if anyone knows why my ip is showing me in a incorrect location, it is showing I live in Cardiff however I live in Suffolk so it is the other side of the country.
Is there any reason for this and can it be changed to my local area, I have phoned up sky but they are clueless and don't even have a answer.
Any answers appreciated thanks

The "IP Location" is based on the location of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Mine shows me as being in Sheffield, coz I am with PlusNet.:beer:0 -

I assume you are on ADSL broadband with Sky. Chances are, Sky's network 'break outs' to the internet from an internet peering point in Cardiff.0

Thanks it confused me as it was the other side of the country, I am on ADSL.
I think I was more intrigued than I was worriedCashBack earned to date - £1244-580 -

IP address Geolocation isn't an exact science.
Put it this way. Back in the early days of the Interweb, you could sign up for a US website, and pretend to be an American, and no one was any the wiser.:) It's only in recent years that people have twigged that because (say) all the IP addresses that start with 123.56 have been allocated to British Telecom, then that means that anyone with that address is probably a UK resident. I believe that Geolocation is a bit more sophisticated than that, but it's no more than an educated guess depending on the identity of your ISP and how they allocate IP addresses.
P.S. Why do you want people to know that you live in Suffolk? Personally, I'm more than happy that websites can't work out exactly where I am based on my IP address.0 -

Im not overly fussed it was just the weather app on here that I wanted to keep as my area not Cardiff, like I said I was more intrigued as to why the ip is not a local area locationCashBack earned to date - £1244-580 -
its just independently kept databases of where IP's have been assigned to.
I dont beleive ISP's in the UK have had to resort to NATing at a pre end user situation yet. However when they do one IP could equate to hundreds of households across the UK (would however be more efficient to have them in the same geographical location).0 -
I think it's where the ISP is hosted as others have said - when I was with NewNet I kept getting ads for the south coast0
