If I moved into a new place with a key meter for EDF would it be easy to take out key meter and change to Southern Electric for DD?
I wouldn't want EDF and don't like key meter. Thanks

You have to register as a customer first with the exiisting supplier.
Once you are registered with EDF, you are free to apply to switch supplier.
This article explains how tha major suppliers treat requests to switch from a PPM to a credit meter,

I don't want to be with EDF though, at all, or have a key meter. Could I change immediately.
I will speak to southern electric.0 -

No. If you move to this property you will automatically be EDF. It typically takes 4-6 weeks to switch supplier, but you can't start that process until you register with them.
If you've don't contact them , how are you paying for your energy? Don't tell me you are planning on using the previous account holders key/card.
I suggest you find a different flat, one not supplied by EDF, if you don't want to deal with EDF.
Why are you planning on speaking to Southern Electric? Do you want to pay perhaps the most expensive charge for a new leccy meter? :cool:0 -
I am looking at a mutual exchange (not decided yet) The flat has a key meter. I am not stupid and know not to use their key.
I have been with Southern electric for 15 years and no problems and costs cheap, that is why I want to stay with them if I move.
As I said I want to continue with DD (direct debit)0 -

Then if you really don't wish to have either a PPM or supplied by EDF, I think the matter is decided.
I guess you could ask if the current tenant would be prepared to arrange a credit meter to be installed and to switch their supplier to Southern Electric before you exchange. But I doubt it's that easy for them (even if they were agreeable) ...0 -
You would have to get the existing supplier to change the meter before you can change supplier. They wont change it unless you are the account holder (unless you can get the existing tenant to get it changed).
We had to do it three years ago. Moved in on Wednesday, used existing key unit for the first two or three days. Phoned electicity co with meter reading immediately we moved in and requested to have meter changed (it was a dual rate E7 meter). It took about a week before the meter was changed but the engineer insisted that as we had a dual rate, he had to replace it with a dual rate. We then had to get it changed to a single rate (took another week, but the meter just had to be reprogrammed) and in the meantime we changed supplier from EDF to E-on. It was all done with no charge to usNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

The OP could change supplier with a PPM if they wanted to, but only after they registered with the existing supplier.0 -

It is easy to change suppliers. I changed from Southern Electric when I moved here. They were totally incompetent. Moving from a key meter to a credit meter is more challenging. I would recommend you look at how much it costs to change. British Gas was free, not sure what others charge, but you had to pass a credit check. Both Scottish Power and British Gas have devices which allow you to top up on line. It means you don't have to worry about ensuring you have credit on your meter- so long as you can get on line you can top up. You plug them into your USB port, put the key/card in, go to the relevant website pay for some credit and use like normal. I found it really handy prior to changing to a credit meter.
PS just noticed EDF is free to change according to the info posted earlier. Might be worth letting them change it for you then changing suppliers. One little thing, would you be happy changing your meter for a prepaid for the people you want to swap with?Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0
