Buying a new house and adding units to the kitchen- how to identify the kitchen?

Hello

Ive had an offer accepted on a small terrace house which comes with a lovely kitchen and solid oak worktops. The trouble is there isnt a dishwasher at the moment- something I cant live without!

Would it be easy to add an integrated dishwasher instead of a cupboard for instance? I need to ID the kitchen range so any suggestions would be much appreciated! I could move the washer machine to the outside toilet I guess and use that space instead- I'd still need a new cupboard door though.

The cupboard on top of the worktop in the left corner is a metal sliding shutter, as is the long wall cupboard. Im not sure if these are part of the kitchen range or were added by the owner.

Anyone know the make/model of the kitchen?

  • Could be b&q. My friend has a sliding bit like your one and her kitchen is b&q. Installed recently.

My kitchen says the make on the little hinge covers inside the cupboards. Worth checking there. My old b&q kitchen had blank ones though!

Thats very handy thankyou! I'll check out the b&q range to see if it matches or failing that see if the make is recorded on the hinge covers :T

The tambour units were done by MFI a lot. They were part of theHowdens group until a few years ago and before MFI went under. You may have some luck at Howdens.

That white gloss kitchen is sold by most kitchen places such as Howden's, Magnet & Benchmarx. Some Magnet kitchens have metal labels attached to interiors as well as another poster mentions here regarding b&q. Finding a match, or pretty close match shouldn't be at all difficult.

You could always try taking off a door & going along to any of the kitchen retailers to see how close a match any of their white gloss kitchens are. The handles are very common & you'll find them easy to buy too should you need a new one when you rearrange the kitchen.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I am sure you have thought of this, but even if you can't get a fully integrated dishwasher, a white freestanding appliance is probably not going to look out of place in an all white kitchen.

Some very helpful replies as usual, thanks everyone!!

When we move in Ill check the insides of the carcasses and see if I can find the maker otherwise will take a door along to Howdens to see how it matches. Until I measure thing up I wont know whether I can fit a full size or slimline dishwasher in, be happy with either tbh! No totally against freestanding but would ideally like it built in!
  • Probably a silly question, but have you asked the people that you are buying from?

From the photo, the kitchen fit doesn't look too old so the current owner may well have a receipt or at least remember where they got the units from or who did the work for them.

Not a silly question at all! Yes this would seem the obvious choice but its early days with the purchase and we havent got to the enquiries stage yet. Plus I didnt want to offend them or seem like I was knocking their kitchen! Im sure I can ask later on, just useful to see if anyone could ID it from the pic or advise whether a dishwasher could be made to replace one of the units thats already there.

Have you looked at Ikea - I have just added a metal shutter unit to my Ikea kitchen. Also handles etc look very much like our replaced units all Ikea also.
  • It looks very much like my Ikea kitchen. Open one of the drawers and look for a plastic cover, over the join at the side, with Ikea printed on it.

I agree with zzzLazyDaisy though, and would consider a freestanding dishwasher – it would be very easy to install it where your washing machine currently is.

(Personally, I don’t like washing machines in kitchens, so if you have the option of turning an outside toilet into a utility room – great!)
