Fitting blinds

Hi all,
I need to install blinds for 8 windows. I ordered the blinds and they came with the brackets etc and the installation guide.

How easy/difficult is it to install blinds?

I asked a handy man to quote and he is asking £85 (4-5hr job)

does it take that long???

for that money, I might as well buy a nice drill and do it myself - if its not too complex

  • Where are you fixing them, direct to the window or wall?

If going to the wall the only problem maybe if you hit a lintel, but some good drill bits will get through it.

Window recess for most of them.

    Does £85 sound reasonable?

£85 is reasonable for a 4-5 hour job. 8 windows, half an hour each.
If it takes him that long, it'll probably take you rather longer.
All depends if you value your time more highly than the £85 quoted.

If it really takes that long, I am happy to pay and get it done.

The question is - how long does it take appx to fit recess blinds in a normal bedroom window?

Forget how long it takes, is it worth a tenner each to get the blinds fitted? Simple yes or no. If it takes 20 mins or 40 mins are you going to offer less or more money? The guy is going to take about half a day plus travel, fuel, use of his tools and expertise. If he takes less time, that's a good thing surely? Just means he hasn't hit major problems.

Is it worth a tenner each to you - the only question you need to answer.

I did mine. on one, two screws went in easy, one was a nightmare and I had to use no nails to secure the rawplug. It all depends on how easy it is to drill. It took about 10 minutes each blind. After, the hardest part was removing the slats and adjusting to fit, that took me ages, especially doing the knots which I found fiddly. Are your blinds made to measure?

What kind of blinds are they, roller, venetian?

If venetian & they are going into a recess then you could have a go yourself as it's pretty easy. I've fitted my own venetian blinds as I guessed I'd be charged over £100 for fitting by getting somebody in to do all of my windows.

I've never had much luck with fitting roller blinds myself though as you need to be pretty exact with placing the fittings & that's something I don't seem to be capable of! Luckily I have a friend who has always been happy to fit roller blinds for me.

I really can't see the fitting of 8 blinds being a 4-5 hour job as I have big windows & think I managed to do 6 venetian blinds in that time & that was plodding along as I'm really no diy genius & included time cutting down some of my wooden venetian blinds to get them to fit into the recess.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

If you have to ask questions like this , then the answer should be obvious...
