My hall never even mentioned it. Just said "have a lovely time and don't set the place on fire" and that was that!"carpe that diem"0 -
I'm terrified of balloons! Not relevant but hey.
Hope the wedding goes well for your friend, some sound ideas here.2 angels in heaven :A0 -
Hi Lisawood - so am I! Not very helpful when I've got a three year old with lots of birthday parties to go to....
Back to the topic in hand: at my brother's wedding recently they used large trellis panels held up with home made stands (basically wood cut into a triangle with a slot to fit the trellis into) to divide the dining area from the dance floor during the meal. It was woven with freshly picked ivy and looked really good. If you don't need to divide any areas off you could use it to screen off dodgy wallpaper etc!

I love this thread and have been combing it for ideas as I need to decorate a village hall too! Mine has a 1950's theme so I am thinking of tons and tons of bunting in my colours.
Perhaps that is a naff idea- but it fits with my theme and may help

I would say if you put the focus on the tables it removes attention from everything else. As a wedding decorator I have a few money saving glamous ideas.
Firstly I would decide on the arrangement of the room - try to put the top table at a focal point, preferably with nice blank, clean wall behind and immediatly around it.
You probably want other table facing the top table.
Secondly, I recommend you cover all of the tables with table cloths - usually white. This can be done a number of ways: you can hire linen table cloths, or you can buy white banquetting role - costco sells it for a good price. e.g. £20
Thirdly, I suggest you decorate the tables. Again this can be done in many ways and can be done simply and cheaply to match the colour scheme.
One ideas is to make table runners (matching the colour scheme). Table runners are usually a coloured piece of material about 30cm wide running the length of the table, across the middle. Most linen hire companies have them in a range of colours though they usually cost £2 - £5 each. There are 2 ways cheaper than hiring:
1. go to a fabric shop and buy an amount of organza fabric - e.g. if you have 10 table 1.5m long and the material is approximately 1m wide you would need 4.5m. Then cut the fabric into 3 x 1.5m lengths and cut each length into 3 x 33cm strips. e.g. £20
2. Or go to a stationary or craft shop and buy a large roll of coloured paper (not crepe or tissue since the colour runs if they get wet) and cut it as detailed above. e.g. £5
An additional idea or alternative idea (though I think it work best with table runners) is to add a table centre. Again, there are so many possibilities but quick, cheap, fast, easy ones include:
1. Go to pound shop and buy a vase for each table (or ikea Skamt vase £0.89 each). (If your local pound shop dont sell any let me know and I can buy some from mine for you and post them to you - I will just charge how much it costs). Then go to your flower market and buy between 1 and 3 flowers for each vase. I think this is most effective with 1 simple (white) vase and 1 rose (matching the colour scheme). You can also tie a bow around the vase if you want.
2. Go to the pound shop and buy a large candle (either a neutral colour or matching the colour scheme) and low down tie a large bow (matching the colour scheme).
3. Go to ikea and buy a coloured glass (city range, available in different colours) £0.99 each and fill it half way with water and then put 3 floating candles in it.
In addition to this, I suggest the crockery is laid on the table: knife, fork, spoon, plate, slim jim glass and/or wine glass.
Finally, buy paper napkins matching the colour scheme and put one in each glass (asda and tescos are usually cheapest).
On the top table all of the same decorations should be done, plus some material or 2inch ribbon can be draped on the front of the top table for additional embelishment.
The brides and bridesmaid bouquet should be positioned neatly on the top table and if additional flowers were used at the ceremony they can also be put on/near the top table. Similar decoation can be applied to a small table for the cake usually located near the top table.
Alternatively I can give you some ideas about balloons which are beautiful and can be used very effectively and relatively cheaply.
If you need anymore ideas or want me to order you any products/services please feel free to email me.

I'm making some really lovely table decorations for mine. You basically buy some clear glass fishbowl type vases (I bought 5 for £10) and then buy some coloured gel they use in flower arranging (I got mine from ebay). Then buy a floralyte (mine were from ebay again - 5 for £11) which goes inside the gel and lights it up. Then put water in and float some flower heads (either real or artificial) on the top. You can do it in any colour scheme you like. My wedding colour scheme is red and black!!2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Hi
we put a marquee linning up in the ceiling. Father in law did this and a friend had the marquee linning.
Jam jars covered in leaves and raffia make lovely small table centres. £15 if you buy them from florist.
We tied organza ribbon round the napkins bought a roll for £5.
We also tied bows to back of each chair. Can email if you pm me.

For my sons wedding I bought organza and draped it in swags across the front of top table. I then laid fairy lights in the folds of fabric. This looked so pretty, could be twinkling or static. If anyone you know has a card for Country Baskets get them to take you, you can take visitors in on your own card. They have glass vases, silk flowers ribbon candles and so much more. I always offer to take our brides at church none have been disappointed.Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes0
