I have a slow internet connection - at a max of 4Mbps - normally - but today, it is like swimming through treacle.
I have just checked it (speedcheck) and found a speed of 0.63Mbps
What is a likely cause ?

Are you doing the speedtest over wireless or connected to the router by an ethernet cable?0

If a Bt line goto
http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
Tick Yes and Begin the Test
Wait a couple of mins then click Further Diagnostics
Enter your full phone number and click Start (or Go - cannot remember-) then OK to the popupbox.
All data is useful but this works for ANY BT number (keep that one to yourself). For ANY BT number the relevant data for the test is under Additional Information, e.g.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7.3 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6 Mbps
This test should be done at the TEST SOCKET to confirm that there's no internal wiring fault.

If it's wireless, change your wireless channel and retest.
But more likely that being the first day of school holidays, every kid in the area is at home on their games consoles etc, and the limited bandwidth is congested all day, rather than just in the evenings. If it's BT, not a lot you can do about their contention ratios.
4Mbps should be perfectly adequate for general surfing etc.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Tried that - no difference
My speed was (yesterday) 630kbps
And my ISP is Talk Talk Business - supposedly with a decent contention ratio and supposedly unaffected by "mere mortals"
Today - it is about 3Mbps - which is just about acceptable !
Before anyone asks - Fibre is a pipe dream....0 -
As its a BT line (with ISP TalkTalk) still worth trying the line stats. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0
