Where to find private landlords?

Hi all
I'm trying to find somewhere that lists contacts/accommodation info from private landlords. All I seem to find are letting agents on things like Right Move and Zoopla - any ideas if there's anywhere that private landlords advertise?
Thanks!

Gumtree - but beware.
Any particular reason why? I rent privately and found my landlord through Rightmove.0 -
I would also say Gumtree but there are lots of scammers out there.
Not so long ago you were writing about letting agents, have you been turned down?0 -
Thanks Gonzo, dyou know of any other sites they might advertise?
After having a chat with a few letting agencies its unlikely they'll accept me as I have a DMP even though i've never missed a rent payment in the last 5 years! (I'll only find out AFTER i've paid their agency fees and I won't get the money back when i'm not accepted)
So...private landlords are the way to go. But I'm having bother tracking down somewhere where they advertise that's legit (I don't really trust Gumtree, I find it's full of con-artists)0 -
Not turned down as such Ognum, just from speaking to a few of them it's not very likely i'll be accepted and i've been advised not to waste my money!0

No guarantee a private LL will accept you either. Many do the same credit checks and referencing process as agents now, only don't charge you as much.
Can you offer rent in advance or provide a guarantor?0 -
I spoke to the letting agents about that and each said it was down to the landlords and one said of the last 3 with similar issues to mine he'd done recently, only one had been accepted so its not looking good.
I know landlords do the same kind of checks but I figured I just wouldn't lose out on as much money - letting agents charge per application so for each individual property I applied for i'd be asked for around £200 which I wouldn't get back.
I feel so frustrated and upset about it all, it's not really my fault i'm in this situation but personal circumstances out of my control, i've been doing really well but this is just another hit.
Maybe i'll just live in a box...0 -

I am also looking for private LLs.
I have seen some adverts in the local newsagents and post office, as well as in the local papers. So it's worth having a look in there too.
Good luck.0 -
Be honest and open about your financial situation upfront and provide proof of your reliable rental history. You may have to go the extra mile to convince a LL that you are a good tenant, but don't go in and innocently complete your tenancy application, and leave the LL to discover you are hiding something. Gather together all the proof you need that you are a genuine, reliable payer and declare it from the start and I am sure you will find somewhere, even if it takes a little longer.0
