Missing soil!
Hi, I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is a keen MSE'er but has yet to venture into the forums yet!
Basically they are re-jigging their garden and removed a lot of soil, some of which was destined for the tip and the rest to top up the new raised beds they have made. They put all the soil (about 7 sacks of it) in the communal passageway at the back of their terraced house at the weekend and on tuesday returned to find all the sacks gone! Its not a passage that the binmen collect from either, so they wouldn't have been taken by mistake. Its shared by 4 houses only and not easy to get to.
They have since spoken to neighbours who have said that one house had gardeners in who took the sacks, but the occupants of that house said that they haven't had gardeners in at all. It is possible that their landlord has had people in without their knowledge though.
So basically my friend is in a quandry about what to do next, they either need to buy soil to finish the job (nor very MSE) or track down the soil thief (possibly quite tricky).
So, MSE'ers what should they do? Does anyone have any bright ideas?

How about a post on the local Freecycle requesting topsoil / old growbags etc?
Otherwise even if the soil is tracked down it will only lead to friction, plus it could never be proved it was the missing soil, also lot of shovelling it back
If Freecycle does not work the I reckon put it down to experience and get some more in
Out local tip has compost made from recycling garden rubbish, and some sewage companies do the same
Spent mushroom compost is another possibily, ofted going fairly cheaply, or loacal stables maybe? When an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
Another possibility is to have a look on Ebay, as there are usually quite a few ads for topsoil free to take away - I've just done a search on 'Top soil' and found about 12 entries most of them free to collect. Worth a try if you can find one local to your friend.
Hope this helps.
