Claiming PPI from a weak position (MBNA)

Hi all,
I have received a letter from MBNA informing me that I may have been missold PPI on a CC I had with them. The issue I have is that I do not recall this account(indeed, they only state the last 4 digits of the card number anyway) and have no recollection of the hows, whens and whys of the application for said card. No need to say that I have absolutely no paperwork from this card remaining (it was from 2007 apparently).
However, that is not to say I wasn't missold thepolicy. I very possibly could have been, due to my lackadaisical attitude toward claiming credit at the time. As a side note, I have now changed my ways!
Very truthfully, I was often given the impression thattaking out PPI would increase my chances of being given credit, and I was also working for a company with generous sickness/disability policy (6 months fullpay, dropped down to 75% indefinitely under an employee insurance policy). I have a company handbook that states this, but no other supporting evidence. I was also living at home with parents at the time, with very little month to month expenses. They would have also bailed me out without question, should the worst happen.
What is the best strategy for obtaining information in order to make a claim? Although it seems a bit dodgy blindly claiming, it also seems like a stupid choice to dismiss an approach from a company claiming that they may owe me money.
Any thoughts of how I should proceed would be greatfully received

Tell them the truth. State your reasons as per your post above.
They have the card number as they have written to you0 -
