groupon credit / refund scam?

Hi
I bought something from groupon for £130, they refunded me £130 in credit for the item, i've gone onto groupon to use the credit (i would have preferred the money back) but because it is one year later i have now lost the credit as it has 'expired'
as far as i can see groupon have just made £130 out of me for absolutely nothing...
i do not understand why the credit would expire? If i had £130 cash in my wallet it wouldnt vanish if i didnt spend it in 12 months!
I called to complain and they said they explained it would expire which may or may not be true (i am unable to remember) but i just cannot understand how i can loose £130 like that!!!
is there anything i can do? Even if they extended it so i can spend it with them i would be happy!
