no pictures just boxes with small red cross in them??

Hi there, hope someone can help me, yesterday computer stopped showing pictures, don't know why but all i've got is a small box with cross in it. It's frustrating me and i don't know how to fix it as i'm a complete non techie dunce. Can anyone advise me what to do?
Funnily enough as i'm typing this i can see all the smilies on the right hand side of the page, but when reading the forums it's only the box.

Try clearing your internet cache first.

Tools| internet options | advanced tab

there is a tick box for show pictures make sure it is ticked

Tried both of your suggestions and as if by magic i can see smilies again.

I have tried pressing your thanks button but it just takes me to the top of the page!!!! I think i must be doing something wrong sorry
