Under storage bed, how long should it last?

I bought a Otterman bed from Worldstores 23/9/2012 (10 month ago).
Last night my daughter put a few bits underneath it, and it wouldn't go back down fully, looking under the bed it looked as though the hinge mechenism had come away fron the side of the bed (these arrive in place fastened to the side so done by the manufacturer).Looking closer if looks as if the hinge as broke away leaving it unrepairable.
The under bed storage is used, but not to often

I guess a bed isnt covered by a guarantee (but I may be wrong)

The bed must be fit for the job though, does 10 month use class as exceptable time for a beds life?, does anyone know or have an opinion?

What rights do I have does anyone know that either?

A bed is covered by the same rights as anything else.

In the first case, talk to the retailer. They may be able to help, it may come with a 1 year guarantee.

If that fails, in the worst case you may need to get an independent report to prove the damage is not down to your misuse and go to small claims court. But talk to the retailer first.

In my mind I would say the bed is covered by a 12 month guarantee. Also as its intended use was for storage and if all you have done is that then they should replace or repair the piece.

Its quite possible that where the hinges attach to the rest of the bed are made from a melamine type chip board, which would never last with the weight of the top being lifted. Possibly sub standard for the job its supposedly designed for.

As a side note - you should keep brief records of discussions along with dates and names of who you spoke to each and every time you make contact with the retailer.

I would even argue that a bed should be durable & fit for purpose. So the storage unit should last for an indefinite period.

I had something similar, a piece of sporting equipment. Whilst I may only use it once per month, the item began to fall apart after 10months. I returned it for a refund, not under warranty but for not being fit for purpose. If I had used it everyday, would it had failed after the 10th time of use?

Well its good to know I am not being unreasonable, and that you seam to be thinking along the same lines.

I e-mailed Worldstores 26/7 they replied the same day, asking for photes of the damage, these were sent, I had big problems with them when I first bought the bed, and eventually they came good....so lets see what happens this time

I will update with their responce.

As suggested I sent a e mail to Worldstores

    > Website: WorldStores
    > Category: I want to make a complaint
    > Message:
    > Hi, I bought a "otterman bed" from you approx 23/9/12 (so 10 month ago), I havent got the order number but you delivered it to .....
    > Anyway the bed has now broke, in that the hinge mechanism has broke away from the side of the bed, it looks unrepairable.
    > The bed has not been used excessively, but of course has been used.
    > If a bed breaks in 10 month then obviously it is not fit for purpose, could you please arrange for a replacement to be sent.
    > thanks ......

I get a reply the same day (last Fri)............

    Good afternoon.

Please accept our apologies that you have a problem with the bed that you purchased. Please would you send in images of the damage to the item so that we can investigate this further for you. Please send these to dod@worldstores.co.uk quoting your order reference BW0116060 and we will contact you to resolve this issue for you.

I send the photes straight away, and so far I have had no responce either to say the have the photos or what they intend to do.

    I sent a further e mail yesterday
"I trust you received the pictures I sent you, could you please update me as to what is happening about my complaint" and again no reply

How long do you have to wait to recieve a reply from them?

In all it been a week is that not long enough for them to make a decision?

Another update worldstores have replaced the bed and collected the broken one. A slight problem is that one of the cylinders is leaking and I can push it closed by hand, but this is not their fault.

Their customer service has been very good and have raised an order to replace the cylinders.

So well done worldstores..........when I get the replacement cylinders I'm going to place a rave review..............
