If a Union has failed to act properly in an individual case, is there an ombudsman to cover this? Thanks

There's their own internal complaints procedure
If they are affilitaed then the TUC
http://www.tuc.org.uk/
If their lawyer/soliciter has c0cked up then the law society
http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/
If they've breached certain bits of TU legislation/Internal Rules then the certification officer
