I haven't used Gimp, but usually you select the part you want to keep, then click edit, click copy. Then create a blank / new page, click edit, click paste. Click edit, click save.
Otherwise, select the part you do not want, click edit, click cut. Click edit, click save as, so as not to make the change to the original permanent.
Maybe best to make a copy of the original then work with the copy0 -
Use Gimp but doing what you ask is not easy, it involves using the selection tool, "grabbing" a selected area, copy/cut and paste it over/onto a new background.
Which is beyond me explaining here, try googling Gimp/Photoshop guidesBlessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0 -
You will have the facility to exactly what you want on your laptop/pc.
Click on start>all programmes> look for accessories>click on that and look for snipping tool
Once you have clicked on snipping tool, the screen greys out. You can either free hand draw round the item you want saved, or use a crop type feature.
Experiment on something else first to get used to it. Let me know how you get on with it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I use Gimp a lot at work, and I usually set the background layer transparency. I'm not at my usual pc at the moment, but I think it's in image>transparency, and add alpha layer. Then select the eraser tool, and go round the image you want to keep (carefully), and remove the background. It takes longer, but I think it's more efficient. When you save the image, because of the transparency, you're left with a white background.0

There are number of ways to do it, if you've currently made a selection with the scissors tool you just need to cut out the selection and paste it into a new transparent layer. As with any selection editing like this it might be worth using a layer mask to ensure the best possible results and easy adjustment. Also, be sure to save your images as png's to preserve the transparency.
If you don't manage to get your intended result from the other suggestions here (Robm1955's is the standard way to do it) then I'll explain layer masks in more depth. Also, if you could post an example image we can see how easy or difficult it might be.0 -
Glad you found it to your liking. As I lay on the beach (actually, the causeway between Weymouth & Portland, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves and listening to the gulls, I wondered if i ought to have taken my instructions to the next stage.
If you/anyone is still floundering and wondering "what next?".
Once you have the subject "caught" within the red lines, at the top rt, click on "save as", in my case my photo's come up, and I save the item there, you could of course save it to your desk top.
Then forget it for the moment. I open up Lunapic (there are many others), then browse to find the saved item, underneath the saved item, click on Imgur code , you will be presented with three (I think) codes, select and copy the Forum code then paste it wherever you want. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Powerpoint 2010 also has a function to cut out images from background, in case you happen to have Office installed0
