Mortgage PPI refund

Just wanting some advice.
I have made a call to my bank (Barclays) relating to a joint mortgage I had with an ex partner. We took out the mortgage in 1998 and I bought him out of the mortgage in 2005.
The initial mortgage was sold to us, on the understanding we had insurance. We had never had a mortgage before, so didn't know any different, we just wanted the mortgage approval.
We were paying £70 insurance per month from 1998 until 2005.
I have received a letter from Barclays today, a very bog standard letter, saying I'm not entitled to PPI. I rung them to ask why, and was first told, even though the mortgage was joint, the insurance policy was a main policy holder ( my ex, although Barclays wont confirm this) I have today spoken to to several members of barclays, and being told very contradicting things. They say I was not on the policy and I'm saying I was, I even tried to make a claim for illness using it years ago and was told the illness I had didn't cover me. They have told me to contact my ex, as they will only deal with him. He was never a Barclays customer. The problem is I have no paperwork, and Barclays wont give me any information. I dont even know if the insurance was PPI, they wont even tell me that. I'm very confused and dont really want to contact my ex for nothing. Any advice would be helpful?
Many thanks in advance.

The MPPI is standalone policy that is not directly linked to the mortgage. This is one of the reasons it has a lower success rate on complaints. It is very common for people to select the main earner only. So, what you say is quite possible.
They say I was not on the policy and I'm saying I was, I even tried to make a claim for illness using it years ago and was told the illness I had didn't cover me.

That is not a response you would expect on MPPI. It sounds like a response for a critical illness policy. Are you sure you are not mixing insurance policies up?

He was a customer. He had the policy.

I think you probably had more than one. Many people do with mortgages.

Most mortgage insurance complaints are rejected anyway. So, your chances of success are low to being with. Couple that with the fact you dont know what you had and you havent given any complaint reasons then it is difficult to see why you would want to carry this on.

Many thanks for your reply. The reason I want to carry on with this claim, is because it involves a large amount of money, which I partly paid over for an insurance, which I didn't want and i would like some of it back. If most mortgage insurance refunds are rejected then i'm not sure why they have a complaints section at Barclays??
My understanding of any insurance refunds, were for credit cards only. It was only last week I found out you reclaim on mortgages, hence the reason why I have left this so long.
I'm not happy with Barclays responses, as I spoke to several people, one of which said I had never had a mortgage with Barclays, so I'm very reluctant to let this go, without a bit of a fight, so to speak. I have found some old docs, showing my name appearing first then my partners. So I'll take it in writing back to barclays and copy in the FOS, whom I have also spoken to toda

Every firm is required to handle the complaints under the FCA complaints process. It doesnt mean that your complaint is going to succeed though. Statistically, most mortgage insurance complaints fail.

You can complain about the colour of the carpet in the branch if you want. Doesnt mean you will succeed.

Again, you can complain about what you like. However, success rates on morgtage insurances are low. Especially life assurance and critical illness cover which are tiny.

And what type of policy is it?

I see the logic there- because there is a complaints department it means your complaint will be upheld. ahh i see
