Sadly I'm old enough to remember when there was only one Blackwall Tunnel. I drove my first artic through it (Bedford 'S' type with scammell trailer) around 1965. It was fun on the bends because there was barely enough room to pass.

rotherhithe tunnel is still like that, in fact you could stick your arm out and touch the oncoming traffic's wing mirror while driving. So if you like the bends - feel free to take a drive through rotherhithe.

Yes but you can't take a truck through Rotherhithe. It has a 6' 6" width limit so only cars and car derived vans can use it.

Really? I think it's typically two hours to cross southbound.
Yes, really - Lewisham to Canning Town in the morning rush hour during school holidays could be done in under half an hour if you know the back doubles through Greenwich. In fact, the really best time was during the Olympics!

On the other hand, it once took me an hour and 50 on a day when Blackwall was closed for an accident and Woolwich was on a one-boat service so I crawled through Deptford to Rotherhithe. Walking would have been faster:p.

Southbound evenings - well. There were days when I switched the engine off and got a book out just past Gillender St:mad:
I need to think of something new here...

Boris doesn't care about the poor people of East London, he's more concerned about pleasing the posh people in West London.

Are you taking the Mickey? I live in the East end, in Canary Wharf, and you won't find many poor people here.

I also used to live in Blackheath, and commute to the Wharf through the tunnel. It was never, ever a problem as I went through at about 06:20 when if always flowed freely. Why not get up at a sensible time and do the same?
