Fantasia Ceiling Fan

I never thought I'd say this as I've always thought they look pretty awful but I'm considering a ceiling fan due to lack of sleep during the hot nights. I've been doing some research online and gather that some of the more stylish (and more expensive!) fans are pretty effective as well as being quiet. I'm considering a Fantasia Viper or Sigma from John Lewis
http://www.johnlewis.com/electricals/lighting/ceiling-fans/c700006963, as JL are so good about returns.
As we'll need an electrician to relocate the existing bedroom ceiling light fitting to accommodate the width of one of these fans, the final price could be quite costly. Before committing, I was wondering if anyone out there has got either of these models and whether they are any good.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Given that we only have a few weeks of extremely hot weather a year, you have to consider whether it's worth the investment?
There was another thread on here recently about someone finding that their attic was like a sauna and difficult to sleep in. They were looking at various options such as air conditioning units.
You can take temporary measures such as sleeping downstairs etc.
One tip that was mentioned on this forum to keep you cool at night is to dip a sheet in water. Wring out all the water and sleep under it. The air flow across the sheet will create a cooling effect and it should be dry by the morning. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
I have somebody doing some refurbishment work on my flat at the moment & strangely enough earlier in the week he was telling me that after building an extension on his house, which included a new bedroom for he & his partner, he has installed a Fantasia Ceiling Fan. (I've just asked him & he tells me he has the Signa model)
He has really sung it's praises & mentioned how quiet it was & how he was certain neither he or his partner would have had much sleep without it in this terrifically hot weather.
Like you, I've never been keen on ceiling fans & in fact are towards the top of my list of things I'd never want to have in a home of mine, but when it comes to a good nights sleep you have to decide what is more important to you & a good nights sleep is very, very important! The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
We have two in our living room very much like the Fantasia Viper.
We bought them a few years ago in B & Q or Wicks at the end of season.
They were £80/£90 each then and earlier this year were thinking of taking them down as we have had not much need of them this last couple of years.
Glad now we did not.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
We have ceiling fans in two of our bedrooms, the existing wiring needed no alteration as the fan uses the usual 1.5 twin core and earth. The only thing to ensure is that the fixing for the fan is screwed into a joist and not just into the plaster board, we also fitted extra supports between the joists in the loft. The only problem we find with leaving the fan running all night is that you end up with irritation from dry eyes, the fan should also draw the cooler air from ground level and not from the ceiling, changing direction of rotation on the fan switch if incorrect.0

Thanks very much for the replies. I am veering towards biting the bullet and going for one of these. As Cattie has pointed out, what price a good night's sleep? In the meantime I'll try the damp sheet tip tonight. Fingers crossed!0

Those fans are clearly all rebranded versions of the same fans available elsewhere - look on diy.com and lightcraft.co.uk for starters. JL seem to be making a good 200% - 400% mark up on those!
I have one that cost me £30 from Homebase, been great for years.

I have one in my bedroom and son and wife have one in theirs, both bought from Argos costing £20 each. They are extremely quiet at night and very efficient. I have mine on all night in this hot weather and have never had dry eyes. I would not like to be without mine.0

Totally wrong on every count.
The Fantasia fans are not rebranded cheapies. They are made specifically for fantasia and if you compare one of the ones shown above side by side to a Fantasia model, you will see the difference.
Apart from being much heavier (the Viper fans I have are about 9 KG), the build quality is far better, hence the reason for them having a 10 year guarantee.
Also JL have not put a 200% to 400% markup on their fans.
Everywhere that sells these charge around the same price, and when buying directly from Fantasia themselves, they are slighty more expensive from John Lewis.
Yes, they are expensive, but they are good quality and extremely quiet (almost silent in fact).0 -
I have 5 Fantasia fans in my property, they are very quiet. I have also fitted the remote control module to them which is great for turning the fan off in the middle of the night if it is too cold. I would definitely pay more for a Fantasia fan than a cheap DIY store fan, as they can be very noisy.0

I have four Fantasia fans (all Viper models), and to be honest, I wouldn't be without them now.
Before I fitted the first one, I bought a fan from B&Q for about £40, and whilst it did look nice, the noise from the motor made it useless for a bedroom at night. That one was relegated to a conservatory where the noise doesn't matter too much.0
