You should take the original registration and car insurance documents. You need to get additional insurance cover for Europe as the cover you have will be minimal. Warning triangles are also compulsory.

I think you should carry a set of replacement bulbs but maybe that is as recommendation rather than a requirement.

I believe you need your own breathalyzer for France now, unless that was repealed.

The introduction of the fines were "indefinitely delayed" by the French government. It's still technically the law to carry them but there is no mechanism to issue fines.

Just thought of two important items for easy access - toilet roll and wet wipes.

Wipes as the children tend to get sticky on snacks on long journys (although we do try to get clean food, ie no chocolate and no crisps that make a mess like wot sits etc)

Toilet roll as the aire's which are basically picnic areas with toilets, quite often don't have toilet roll.

Glad the ins tip was useful.

I knew there was something I'd forgotten to add to my list... :o

It's one of these. (Or similar.)

Plugs into the cigar-lighter socket of the car and gives you a 13-amp AC socket, powered at 230 volts. Good for about 300 watts.

Absolutely invaluable. Plug a UK 4-gang into it.

It pays for itself because you don't need to buy car-adaptors for your devices – just plug their normal UK mains chargers into the 4-gang. :money:

Two caveats: don't try to run anything ridiculous with a huge current-draw (like a 3 Kw kitchen kettle!) off it and don't leave it plugged into the car when you're not using it or it will flatten the car's battery (or increase your fuel consumption when driving – electricity isn't free, it has to be generated by something!)

    Have a great time! :)
