Tricky College Situation, Need Advice

  • Wow thank you for this post, lots of relevant information. I will see if I can book an appointment with student services at my college tomorrow or next week then.

Thank you for the encouragement and kind words, and also for the excellent career suggestion. I've been so caught up with the fun of learning the Japanese language and desire to teach within the country that I hadn't even considered the possibility of teaching to foreigners within the UK who have a poor grasp of English; it's definitely a niche that needs filling.

If you want to take this path then I would like to suggest that you do English as a Second language on your course. I suspect that TEFL and TESL have different teaching methods. Perhaps that is also something you could also discuss with someone at college.

    It really isn't.

There are thousands of TEFL/TESL qualified teachers in the UK chasing what work there is available, most of them part time and working seasonally.

I have to say that is my experience too. My neighbour got that qualification, but really struggled to get enough hours, even though she was told she was very good. Her hours were all over the place and she had no control over them. She was also much more in demand in the summer holidays, which was ok for her because she didn' t have kids, but would be a problem for a mum with school age children. She enjoyed the teaching, but the stress of getting work got to her. She ended up retraining to become a physiotherapist. She's now is too much in demand!!!

Here's some info on whether you can get something from the student loans, hopefully your course comes under one of these-

I really hope you do well - I also have an interest in the Japanese language and even bought myself a handbook to learn some phrases. I can only remember how to count to ten and how to say 'p off you b*stard' though! Good luck!

This ^^^^^^^ English is already taught in Japanese schools so there aren't many Japanese who come to this country needing to learn the language.
