About to do DRO, but unsure now

Hi, I have been to my CAB and I have debts of 9k, been truly killing me over the years. I am able to do one, I have nothing in assets its just me and my debts.
I want to know what the law is with regard to accepting a gift from a family member, my Gran died and left my Mum a little cash, she wants to by me a few things up to the value of about 2000 puond, like clothes, shoes, food and a bike, and maybe a newer computer, she knows I've been struggling and wants to help now she can, but now i'm scared i'll jepodise my DRO application =/

I owe about 500 too pound which cant be written off, rent, tax, tv licence. She wants to know if she can help me there and to what degree can she help with other household things?
It would be so nice to get my rent arrears cleared, if i miss a payment i'm evicted by the courts.
I just don't know what is aloud for me in terms of things I can have, I literally have nothing in my flat of value, its all tat. Is there a limit to what you can have until it compromises my DRO?

Sorry for talking too much, and thanks for any help.

firstly, have your mom clear the rent arrears and tv licence debts. What tax is it you owe? I am under the impression that if it's income tax its an included debt..?

If she buys you clothes, shoes and food, these are NOT assets (unless you buy a £500 pair of jeans or a £600 suit!) so she is fine to buy you these things. The bike is something to be careful with, if she spends less than £300 on it, no issue anywhere, if it's more than that, it's safer if she buys herself a bike that she then lends to you. with regards to a computer, you can buy a decent one for £300-£400, as soon as it's switched on it's second hand and not worth that anymore.
What she must not do is give you the money to then buy items yourself, with the bike and computer this could be seen as disposal of an asset, it's much simpler and less risky for her to purchase the items for you...
  • Thanks for this information, make it much clear now. I'll be sure for her to pay off debts for me, haha yes I'm only thinking of a 2nd hand bike no more than 100 punds, for the PC about 300. TOPS 400 for clothes and shoes becuase i literally have none! This will be several outfits of course

phew, well thats i dont think this will compromise my DRO, i'm so looking forward to getting my life bacvk on track.
