Is 10,000 the MAXIMUM ? not the recommended.

Its only recommended to fleets and business users that want to spend as little on the car as they can get away with.

6000 - 8000 is more than enough mileage between changes. Depending on journey types.

I think you have hit the nail on the head

    Well serviced a must

Mechanical sympathy, something sadly lacking nowadays

I think I would add if your vehicle develops a strange or different noise, investigate, it won't go away. I regularly ride a bicycle and the horrendous noises I hear coming from cars that pass me

Some cars will go out to 20k miles before the ECU asks you for a service.
Like it or not, in future there will be very few cars that have been fastidiously serviced from day one. If I was buying a car new to keep forever, yes, I'd change the oil very frequently. But as it is I'm stuck buying old bangers and hoping they won't break down on me, and I can't undo unknown damage from previous abuse. I used to do about 6,000 miles a year in my own car at home, so did an oil change once a year, unless I was doing a number of trackdays in which case it would get fresh oil after that.
Now I'm out in the sticks of Australia with a gas guzzling 4x4 that my wife insists on driving through the outback every weekend. I'm wondering if new oil every 10,000kms' is frequent enough!

The actual relevant wording in the service schedule is:
...the oil must be changed every 15,000 km (10,000 miles) or 1 year.
So yes, it is a maximum, and 15,000 km is actually 9,320 miles.

What evidence are you aware of for your 6,000 to 8,000 miles range?

Edit: Not suggesting you are wrong re. changing oil more often, but if I were to consider doing so I'd want to have some justification for the extra cost.

Evidence that my old Rover 825 diesel went past 250,000 miles, Numerous petrol cars past 150,000 miles and the engines still purred.

Although with the Montego estate there was very little bodywork left holding it in.

My journeys are short and lots of traffic, Seriously bad traffic in fact. My average speed over a week is between 10 - 15 mph.

I doubt the engines would last long with 12,000 mile changes.

When i do manage to get a free run, I do give it some beans to blow the cobwebs away. I also tow a caravan with it.

You dont have to. But it works for me.

Sorry, only just spotted this reply.

My daily commute is only 9 miles each way, but I do average just under 30 mph normally. On top of that I make quiite a few long trips a year to family members who live 180 miles a way.

Checking my car's service book I've spotted it should actually be on variable servicing (i.e. longer intervals) provided fully synthetic oil is used, but that the previous owner (and I, unintentionally) have chosen to use shorter, 10,000 miles service intervals. I think I'll stick to that for now, but obviously it's trick to be sure if a shorted interval would be sensible!

Because the oil stays cleaner in a petrol car its easy to think its still good but it still degrades over time.

Ran lots of older petrol cars where the oil turned black after a few thousand miles.

With a diesel it takes a few changes to get it looking clear. Even then it doesnt stay that colour for long.
